Tony Cragg
The sculptural mural, Dining Motions (1982), by Tony Cragg (b. 1949, Liverpool) can be seen as an extensive painting assembled from found objects. Composed in a seemingly random pattern, various flat shapes and scraps of different materials which are painted partly white are mounted on the wall. In contradistinction to painting, the motifs are represented not through the application of colour, but the colour and texture of the original unpainted material. From this busy collage an image of a meal appears comprising a fork, a sausage and the blade of a knife. Cragg's sculptures are characterised by the diversity of materials which, for the artist, can be carrier of meaning, thoughts and emotions.
