Jochen Lempert

Jochen Lempert’s (b. 1958, Moers) observational approach and keen eye for detail in natural phenomena draws upon his scientific training as a biologist. His photographs variously capture the flight of a fly or a butterfly, the patterns created on the surface of the sea by rain, or – in this instance – the movement of a glow worm. The images – which the artist typically displays unframed – are the result of meticulously developed processes. Their sharp contrasts and grainy texture give them a drawing-like quality. Collectively, they embody something of the essence of photography as expressed in the etymology of the word itself: to write, to draw with light.
