Historian and President of the National Museum of Military History, Frank Rockenbrod leads a guided walk along the Schumannseck Remembrance Trail, exploring one of the most significant and devastating sites of the Battle of the Bulge. Between December 1944 and January 1945, American and German forces fought here in brutal winter conditions, with the front line remaining frozen for more than three weeks. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives in what became some of the deadliest fighting of the Ardennes Offensive.
Today, the forest still bears the visible scars of war. Along the trail, visitors encounter foxholes, trenches, bomb craters and reconstructed military shelters, some integrated into former quartzite quarries. Archival photographs taken in and around Schumannseck, together with silhouettes and objects from national collections, bring the experiences of soldiers and civilians into focus.
Useful Information: We will meet at the Town Hall in Wiltz to view the two works by Annette Kelm before taking a shuttle to the starting point of the remembrance trail. The walking route is approximately 1.2 km long and includes uneven forest terrain. Participants are advised to wear sturdy footwear suitable for outdoor walking.
