The museum must be a place of dialogue. It’s not just about showing works, it’s about encouraging dialogue and reflection.

— Marie-Claude Beaud

Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean mourns the loss of its founding director, Marie-Claude Beaud (1946-2024). Serving as director from 2000 to 2008, Beaud laid the foundation of the museum’s collection and remains a central figure in Mudam’s history. Her visionary leadership was instrumental in Mudam’s development as an internationally recognised contemporary art museum.

Marie-Claude Beaud shaped Mudam’s identity through her choice of innovative and often experimental exhibitions, which established the museum as a dynamic hub for contemporary art. Beaud championed forward-thinking approaches that brought together fine art, architecture, design, fashion and new media, and sought to promote a dialogue between the disciplines. Her dedication to showcasing international artists from diverse fields and her daring, forward-thinking spirit were instrumental in positioning the young museum as a key cultural institution on the local and international scenes. Today, her legacy lives on in Mudam’s collection, which continues to reflect the distinctive outline she envisioned.

Marie-Claude Beaud’s vision for Mudam as an open and inclusive space was a defining aspect of her leadership. A fervent advocate for education and art mediation, she created opportunities for visitors to engage more profoundly with artworks on display. Her efforts turned the museum into a vibrant platform for exchange and meaningful encounters between artists and public. Under her stewardship, the museum experienced a pivotal phase of growth, expansion and consolidation. Her contributions to Mudam and the broader Luxembourg art scene remain profoundly significant. She gave form and substance to the founding ideals of Mudam, shaping its legacy for generations to come. For this, we remain deeply grateful.

Marie-Claude Beaud will be remembered as a visionary who left an indelible mark on Mudam and Luxembourg’s cultural landscape. With her passing, the art world has lost a figure whose legacy endures through the groundbreaking exhibitions she curated and her profound influence on Mudam, Luxembourg and the international art community.
