Production Manager

Mudam, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Luxemburg, seeks a production manager.

Your Mission

The production manager works within the Department of Artistic Content and reports to the head of said department, which comprises three main branches: the curatorial team, the collection team and production team. As the head of the production branch, you manage a team composed of registrars and technicians (eight people). You are responsible for the successful execution of exhibitions and events from conception to closing and liaise with a wide range of contacts within and beyond the museum. You pay particular attention to the quality of the installations and significantly contribute to the museum’s image both locally and internationally. You may also be called upon to represent the museum in national and international committees in relation to your domain of responsibilities.

Your main responsibilities are as follows:

The Production of Exhibitions and Events:

  • Project Conception:
    • To collaborate with project leads, and notably the curators, in the conception of exhibitions and events
    • To analyse the feasibility of projects: evaluation of necessary resources (budget, team, calendar) and technical feasibility
    • To develop the technical conception of exhibitions and events while simultaneously meeting the aesthetic criteria, as well as criteria related to the conservation of artworks, building and equipment infrastructure, and security
    • To provide strong proposals for alternatives to any obstacles that are encountered, in order to bring projects to term while remaining true to their original concept
    • To prepare and develop preliminary production budgets for exhibitions and events
  • Project Coordination:
    • To plan and oversee projects from preparation to closing
    • To coordinate internal and external staff
    • To communicate information in an organised and timely manner to all relevant parties involved over the course of the project
    • To organise and lead production meetings
    • To ensure the proper execution of installations and deinstallations, and contribute to operational labour as needed
  • To remain informed on the evolution of eco-responsible practices in the technical realisation of cultural projects

Logistics, Transportation, et Conservation

  • To supervise and follow-up on loan requests in the context of exhibitions
  • To maintain relationships with lenders
  • To manage insurances in accordance to our commitments with lenders
  • To supervise and follow-up on condition report requests
  • To schedule and oversee the movements of artworks: to organise and track transportation, crating and uncrating, installation and deinstallation
  • To draft condition reports (in collaboration with the team of registrars)
  • To supervise and coordinate the hanging and removal of artworks
  • To assure the prevention of risks related to the alteration of works during their transportation, handling, and exhibition
  • To oversee the storage, transport, and insurance of artworks belonging to the museum in collaboration with the collections manager
  • To oversee the administrative procedures of declarations for customs

Administrative and Financial Management

  • Maintenance of allocated budgets
  • To remain regularly informed of the legal status of outgoing and incoming loans
  • Management of orders for material and equipment in compliance with the existing protocol

Team Management

  • To supervise the registrar and technician teams
  • To participate in the recruitment process and annual reviews
  • To support team members within their roles and in their professional development
  • To develop, alongside Human Resources, a training strategy in line with the professions represented within the team
  • Supervision and management of external contractors
  • To contribute to the development of streamlined processes and tools necessary for the optimal functioning of the production branch, with the aim of continuous improvement

Your Profile

We are looking for a highly detail-oriented, organised, and solution-oriented individual who wishes to be engaged in the development of the museum and the production team.

Suitable candidates will recognise themselves in this description and provide the following skills and personal attributes:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the production of exhibitions and management of cultural projects within an international museum or cultural institution
  • A Bachelor or Master’s degree in the management of cultural projects or artworks, or equivalent
  • A strong knowledge of contemporary art history
  • Excellent knowledge of project management techniques
  • Knowledge of the museum context and its legal framework
  • Knowledge of preventative conservation guidelines
  • Proven experience in the management and supervision of a team
  • Excellent leadership, communication and listening skills, with a proven ability to work as a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Curiosity, open-mindedness, enthusiasm, and a sense of humour
  • The capacity to innovate and question existing structures: strong problem-solving skills when faced with technical constraints
  • Strong writing skills and ability to summarise
  • Mastery of office and drawing tools (SketchUp)
  • Working knowledge of collection and archival management softwares
  • Fluency in both written and oral French and English. Knowledge of German and/or Luxembourgish is also an advantage.
