Water Whistle ft. Moss at the Institute for Multi-Species-Singing

This summer, poet and artist Jasmina Al-Qaisi invites visitors to Mudam to craft a live radio play inspired by the sounds and musical narratives of wetlands. Through a series of workshops that will encourage you to be curious and connect with your surroundings, we will explore Mudam’s inside and outdoor spaces. Guided by Jasmina and her playful and poetic practice, you will whistle and giggle as you make your way around the museum creating the ensemble of a possible multi-species-singing group. The artist invites you to use your imagination and pay attention to one another, the environment and its multitudinous organisms in poetic and thoughtful ways, challenging pre-conceived notions of these ecosystems.

The band name Water Whistle ft. Moss was created for the ephemeral Institute for Multi-Species-Singing and references Sphagnum moss, a group of spongy peat mosses that store water, as well as the bird-shaped water whistle or Péckvillerchen. With these two elements in mind, we will create sound and text scores to play throughout the summer.

With the creation of the temporary Institute for Multi-Species-Singing, we aim to strengthen our connection to different ecosystems by learning ways to engage with our surroundings beyond human pre-conceptions.

Join the multi-species-singing group this summer and be part of this temporary community. We’ll be making sounds with, for and in our surroundings, while contributing to a radio play that will be composed by the end of the summer.

Workshop for Adults and Youth 13+

Multi(species)lingual Gossip at the Institute for Multi-Species-Singing
04 – 06.09.2024 | 14:30 – 16:30 | Adults and Youth aged 13+

In the company of artist Jasmina Al-Qaisi, we invite you to take over the museum’s outdoor spaces and imagine them as a swamp. Over the course of the workshop, we will engage in games and exercises, addressing our ideas and findings on wetlands.

What kinds of multi-lingual gossip exist in the more-than-human worlds and how could we take part? By writing with sounds and relaying waves, we will work on preserving this experience as an archive of a moment in time.

Join in to find language in the calls of birds and frogs, the bubbly whispers of humid mosses and the sonorous updates from the world of insects. Together, we will uncover new ways to use our imagination and open our minds to our immediate surroundings.
