Jean-Marie Biwer created the twenty-two works that constitute this series during the winter of 2014 in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, a little village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence that has been famous for its ceramics workshops since the 17th century.
He respected the context of the tradition of earthenware in Moustiers, that is characterized by the depth of their white color, their shading and their grotesque motifs. The works of Jean-Marie Biwer however tend to differ which puts him at risk “to do the splits” - as he calls it - in order to guarantee a more personal execution. They mess up scenes of the daily routine drawn from life. By their iconography they remind of the world of comics or cinema, or even digital pictures. They are also emblematic for the experimentation with design and techniques that encouraged him since the beginning of his career and they confirm that the drawing technique has been playing a central role in his work for the past few years.
