Christian Marclay. Video Quartet

Collection presentation

The performances, videos and installations of Christian Marclay (*1955, San Rafael) often explore the subject of music and its limits. Co-produced by Mudam in 2002 Video Quartet (2002) is a four channel video work composed of approximately 700 film clips projected as synchronised images, positioned side by side. Marclay’s meticulous arrangement collages excerpts from an extensive catalogue of Hollywood cinema, including films from the 1920s to the early 21st century, traversing back and forth wtihin history with editorial flair. A succession of brief passages connected via the theme of music come together in work that alternates between periods of frenetic rhythm and more tranquil interludes, creating the work’s own narrative dynamic.
