The 15th anniversary of the museum provides an opportunity to demonstrate the diversity and coherence of the Mudam Collection, which was established in 1996, before the museum was built. This presentation, based on a selection of some forty artworks, offers an overview of themes that address form, methods and attitudes in contemporary art, from the 1960s to the opening decades of the 21st century. This journey – which evolves as the displays are regularly modified – engenders connections between works purchased over a period of twenty-five years, revealing common narratives.
The selection explores a set of ideas that are fundamental to contemporary art. It underlines, for example, the influence of conceptual and minimalist art on subsequent generations of artists. The display also considers the ways in which figuration and abstraction have established a dialogue that is constantly renewed, as well as the role of stories in the production of images and representations of the world. The selection also highlights the diversity of the materials, media and processes used by artists, ranging from the use of industrial materials and found objects to the implementation of creative protocols or the adoption of the body as a material within performance art. The display serves as an opportunity to reflect and consider how the collection can be developed for the future, while also emphasising an ambition to reflect the diversity of contemporary art and its ability to cast light on the modern world.
