On the occasion of the exhibition Civic Floor, Mudam presents a screening of Sung Tieu's new moving image work Moving Target Shadow Detection (2022), followed by a conversation between Michelle Cotton, curator of the exhibition, and the artist.
Civic Floor is the first institutional solo exhibition of Sung Tieu’s (b. 1987, Hai Duong, Vietnam) work outside of Germany.
Working with a range of media including sculpture, drawing, text and sound, Tieu’s immersive installations consider the discrete visual codes embedded within institutional structures and their systems, raising questions of equality, governance and individual sovereignty.
The work of Sung Tieu combines a sensitivity to linguistic and aesthetic codes with a rigorous, analytical approach to subject matter. Throughout her projects, Sung Tieu addresses how social or political control is imposed or reinforced via industrial design.
Modelled and rendered in 3D, Moving Target Shadow Detection (2022) reconstructs the entire interior of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana, the site of the first-known instance of a supposed sonic attack, which collectively became known as the ‘Havana Syndrome’. The film was co-produced and co-commissioned by Forma and Frieze.
