Marking the 50th anniversary of Pierre Guyotat’s Eden, Eden, Eden (1970), this podcast is part of a series of readings organised by the Association Pierre Guyotat in collaboration with contemporary art institutions and galleries around the world.

Since its release on 9 September 1970, this provocative novel has attracted a mixture of scandal and fascination. The work of a young author, it was prefaced with texts by influential French philosophers Michel Leiris, Roland Barthes, and Philippe Sollers, and endorsed by Michel Foucault. Its immediate censorship attracted further international support from leading cultural figures including Pier Paolo Pasolini and Joseph Beuys.

Fifty years later, the work of Pierre Guyotat remains impactful and Eden, Eden, Eden has proven to be prescient of a world on the verge of transformation – through violence, sexuality, decolonisation, and cosmology. The texts herald the endpoint of colonial history as well as the starting point of a new history.

On this occasion, Mudam has invited the Luxembourg actor Fábio Godinho to interpret Guyotat’s text for a 30-minute online podcast.

Biography Fabio Godinho

Fábio Godinho (b. 1986, Salvaterra de Magos) is an actor, director and performer.

At the Avignon Festival, he presented Le privilège des chemins by Fernando Pessoa in 2009 and Des voix sourdes by Bernard-Marie Koltès in 2016, and in 2021 he will present Sales Gosses in the Avignon Festival Off. In 2013, he was a finalist in the Prix Théâtre 13/Young Directors with Hôtel Palestine by Falk Richter. In 2014, he presented his text Que la terre m’étouffe si j’agis faussement at the Théâtre National du Luxembourg. In 2017, he toured France with the Mavra company with Play Loud by Falk Richter. He also directed Sport(s) at the Théâtre Berthelot in Montreuil and at the Théâtre de la Jonquière in Paris. He has performed in art videos created by his brother, the artist Marco Godinho: Notes sur cette terre qui respire le feu, filmed on Mount Etna, Italy, in 2017, and Written by Water, presented in the Luxembourg Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale.
