Face-à-Face (Face to Face) proposes a new dialogue between two museum collections. It establishes connections between works by major figures of the modern avant-garde in Germany and France and those of contemporary artists from around the world. Questions of metamorphosis, the transformation of matter, optical phenomena and the perception of space are present throughout this exhibition. The works shown highlight a diversity of formal experimentation, as well as the willingness of artists to challenge social and political structures.

Tarek Atoui. Waters’ Witness
Opening: Friday 07.10.2022 | 19h00–21h30
Exhibition: 24.09.2022 05.03.2023
A series of performances by Tarek Atoui and invited musicians is programmed around the exhibition.

The exhibition Waters’ Witness was conceived by Tarek Atoui and produced by the Fridericianum in Kassel in cooperation with the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto and Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. The exhibition at the Fridericianum was supported by the Hessische Kulturstiftung.
Media partners: Mousse Magazine, L'Essentiel Radio, Beaux Arts Magazine

Tarek Atoui’s (b. 1980, Beirut) work inhabits the intersection of visual and sound arts. Known for his sonic installations and performances, Atoui privileges a sensory approach along with an investigative process that embraces history, anthropology, ethnology and musicology. He considers sound to be a catalyst for human interaction leading him to collaborate with other musicians, as well as researchers and musical instrument makers. The exhibition Waters’ Witness, presented in Mudam Grand Hall and the Park Dräi Eechelen, is based on the ongoing project I/E Atoui initiated in 2015. Drawing upon research made in collaboration with the musicians and composers Chris Watson and Eric La Casa, Atoui uses sound recordings to document the human, ecological, historical and industrial realities of coastal cities that have a past rooted in their docklands, such as Athens, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Beirut and Porto.

Sung Tieu. Civic Floor
Opening: Friday 07.10.2022 | 19h00–21h30
Exhibition: 08.10.2022 05.02.2023

Civic Floor is produced in partnership with MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA) and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin, Lethbridge (Canada)

Mudam’s Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Pavilion will host a new exhibition by Sung Tieu (b. 1987, Hai Duong, Vietnam).

Sung Tieu works in a range of media producing exhibitions that draw upon extensive research. Her works of sculpture, drawing, text and sound consider questions of governance, civic responsibility and justice, analysing mechanisms of state control. Making reference to art history, and in particular to minimalism and the deployment of the grid, they highlight the translation of ideologies within industrial design and architecture and the prevalence of abstraction as an organising force.

Civic Floor will present a new body of sculpture and wall-based works, which are accompanied by sound. The exhibition considers questions of space and volume, both in terms of their fundamental role in art-making as well as in the design of carceral spaces and bureaucratic systems.
