Come and take part in a pewter casting workshop with jewellery designer Birgit Thalau. Taking the aluminium sculptures of artist duo Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil as a starting point, Thalau introduces you to the unusual technique of casting in sand. This technique has been used for centuries in industrial settings but also in the craft sector, such as silversmithing and goldsmithing. First, create a small wax design using basic modelling tools. You will be encouraged to explore the possibilities of shaping techniques and to experiment with the design of a ‘medallion’. Then, copy your reworked individual shapes into a personal jewellery item by casting the wax using a sand mould into which molten pewter is poured. Observe the metal change from a liquid to a solid state. The casting process is an excellent method to use when you want to produce several identical metal products.
