The Freigeister exhibition is the result of a collaborative process which, in the preparatory phase, involved a series of discussion days between artists, curators and outside experts. Their remit was to reflect on the most significant issues affecting Luxembourg today, such as borders, migration, languages, living together and the development of our country.

Mudam would like to continue this discussion platform by involving the public. From 8 January to 26 February 2022, each Saturday morning you are invited to join experts from a variety of fields – artists, researchers, writers, architects, sociologists and representatives of institutions and associations – to discuss some of the key themes reflecting the complex reality of Luxembourg today, how the country is changing and its future prospects.

Each Discussion Platform – Freigeister begins with a presentation of their work by the artist in person, followed by a presentation on the chosen topic by a guest expert. These presentations are followed by a moment of convivial discussion around a breakfast with the public and the speakers of the "Freigeister Alphabet" project.

Des forêts humaines, trop humaines par Carole Schmit (professeure invitée, Master en Architecture, Université du Luxembourg) et François Thiry (architecte)

Dans un essai paru en 1889, Oscar Wilde se prononçait contre le courant naturaliste en littérature et en peinture. Ce n’est pas l’art qui doit imiter la vie, soutenait-il, mais la vie qui doit s’inspirer de l’art. La nature elle-même devait suivre les peintres paysagistes et leur emprunter leurs effets. Wilde pensait que la nature est une création humaine, qu’elle « s’éveille à la vie » dans notre cerveau. Or, cette polémique antinaturaliste n’a pas vieilli autant qu’on pourrait le penser. Wilde était au fond fasciné par l’influence que les œuvres d’art étaient capables d’exercer sur les comportements sociaux et les formes culturelles dans les conditions émergentes de la modernité. Sa vision n’a-t-elle pas été confirmée par la diffusion instantanée et universelle des formes artistiques permise par les médias de masse – l’édition, la presse, la mode, la publicité, le cinéma, la télévision, puis Internet ? Pour les architectes Carole Schmit et François Thiry, la thèse du mimétisme inversé, formulée par Wilde il y a cent trente ans, trouve des prolongements étonnants dans le domaine de l’aménagement du territoire.
Carole Schmit et François Thiry sont architectes urbanistes, fondateurs de l’agence Polaris Architects basée à Rotterdam, Bruxelles et Luxembourg depuis 2001. Carole Schmit est chargée d’études à l’Administration des bâtiments publics et professeure invitée à l’Université du Luxembourg.
Aline Bouvy (1974, Watermael-Boitsfort, Belgique) a présenté des expositions personnelles à l’IKOP – Musée d’Art Contemporain à Eupen (2020), à la Künsterhaus Bethanien à Berlin (2019), à la Galerie Nosbaum Reding à Luxembourg (2018, 2014), à la Galerie Albert Baronian à Bruxelles (2018), au CIAP à Hasselt (2018). Entre 2000 et 2013, elle a travaillé en collaboration avec John Gillis. Elle a également co-fondé le collectif féministe « The After Lucy Experiment » avec Claudia Radulescu, Delphine Deguislage, Charlotte Beaudry, Céline Gillain et Aurélie Gravas, actif de 2010 à 2015. Elle vit et travaille au Luxembourg et à Bruxelles.
