Australian artist Gemma O’Brien creates super-graphics, illustrative lettering and hand-painted murals with the mission of elevating words to an art form. O’Brien, also known as Mrs Eaves, is an internationally renowned designer and artist known for her bold graphics and murals. Her work has been commissioned by Apple, Nike and Google and is held in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City.

Leaving law school to pursue graphic design, O’Brien became inspired by letterpress printing and has since gone on to build a career around drawing, painting and digital design. Outside her commercial work, she explores language, nature and the human experience through her art practice.

Join O’Brien for a discussion of her intricate graphic design, typography, wall paintings and brand collaborations from the past decade. Using live demos of painting, drawing and calligraphy, O’Brien will reflect on how analogue processes have shaped pivotal moments in her career and how her art practice is being influenced by her current research in neuroesthetics, a field within cognitive neuroscience investigating the neural underpinnings
of esthetic experience.
