What does it mean to work with textiles today?
Because of the academic and historical distinction between fine arts and crafts, techniques involving needles, threads, and fabrics were long undervalued and pushed to the margins of artistic creation. Yet they are an integral part of culture and are now reclaiming their place within the field of visual arts, with many contemporary artists – including Igshaan Adams – reappropriating them as a socially and artistically meaningful mode of expression.
Textile arts are also rooted in a tradition of collective practice, involving collaboration between different skills and cultural references. They are closely connected to care and repair work and require great attention and precision, resulting in pieces that carry diverse meanings, customs, and methods.
Through this series of workshops, Mudam invites participants to discover different textile practices with artists specializing in techniques such as weaving, embroidery and tufting. Each session will allow experimentation with materials and surfaces, using threads and fabrics as well as found materials. By combining media and techniques, participants will explore how textiles can evolve into sculpture, gain dimension and become artworks in their own right.
Session 1: 21.02.2026 – Weaving Your Creativity
Discover weaving with Sandra Resende
This workshop is inspired by the work of Igshaan Adams, who sensitively explores materials and textures to tell stories and create unique artworks. Participants will transform threads and simple materials into personal patterns and compositions by experimenting with weaving techniques and giving free rein to their creativity.
Session 2: 18.04.2026 – Beads and Wool: A Dialogue from Heart to Hand
Discover embroidery with Louise Aimard
In this embroidery workshop, conceived as an inner landscape, participants are invited to let materials interact throughout their creative process. Using beads, wool, rope, chains and other materials, they will apply embroidery techniques with a needle to create their own personal universe. Although it is a traditional craft, this workshop offers an opportunity to explore the contemporary potential of hand gestures.
Session 3: 30.05.2026 – Tactile Compositions
Discover tufting with Julie Costentin
In this creative workshop combining different techniques, participants can give free rein to their imagination and intuition to create a ‘precious stone’ using tufting and textile collage on canvas. This is an opportunity to learn the basics of tufting and to develop a creative composition on canvas. Mood boards will be available for inspiration, but each participant is free to create their own idea of a mini ‘gemstone’ rug. No special skills are required – just a desire to play with colours and textures and enjoy a rich tactile experience!
Biographies:
Portuguese, born in Mozambique, Sandra Resende now lives in Luxembourg. She studied philosophy and theatre at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. After graduating in 1997, she worked in the performing arts before moving to Luxembourg in 2005. After a break devoted to motherhood, she turned to textile art. Sandra creates textile works through weaving, tapestry, embroidery and the reuse of found materials, exploring memory, gesture, and the passage of time. Guided by a tactile and intuitive process, her practice questions place, identity, and journeys – both personal and collective.
Louise Aimard is a hand embroidery artist. After earning a CAP diploma in 2015 and then a BMA, she worked in renowned workshops where she acquired the high standards of French craftsmanship. She is now based at the 1535° Creative Hub. By remaining curious and open to new embroidery processes and contributing to its necessary evolution, she aims to sustain the tradition of art embroidery. Combining modernity with ancestral gestures is both an essential and deeply enriching challenge. Adapting techniques, transforming materials, and working with light are central to her reflections and practice, guided by craftsmanship, rigor and precision.
Julie Costentin (born in 1991 in Luxembourg) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Barcelona. Her work combines painting and tufting to create hybrid pieces that explore colour, texture and emotion.Inspired by her background in illustration and her multicultural experience gained in Luxembourg, Brussels, and Madrid, she creates immersive and playful compositions that blend figurative and abstract elements. Her practice includes framed tufted rugs, mixed-media paintings and contemporary tufted objects such as cushions and mirrors, where symbolic motifs and bold colour palettes come together to create tactile and joyful experiences.
