During the Cold War, almost every family in the Eastern Bloc treasured and meticulously maintained the car they had waited so long for. From Russia via Bulgaria and the Czech Republic to Germany and Norway, love stories between humans and Trabi, Moskvitch and Volga are captured on film. We meet people who are fond of their beloved piece of tin, then and now, or have even amassed a considerable collection. There’s a couple who met and fell in love at a retro car exhibition, a young woman who was inspired by pin-up models and always poses in front of vintage cars from the East, a former racing champion and automobile fanatic who turned his old banger into a luxury vehicle, and many more. They all have a soft spot for these rickety rust buckets, because - even though the products of the socialist automobile industry were usually slow, chunky and tedious to drive and repair - they were regarded as showpieces of a successful life. A cinematic journey, made with ultimate attention to its heroes.
