Coup de Cœur EIB
My coup de cœur at the EIB is the work of the young Berlin-based artist Leyla Yenirce. I have known Leyla since she was a student in Hamburg. At that time she experimented mainly with video, was known throughout the city as a DJ and worked with various institutions on performance projects. During the pandemic she discovered painting and worked consistently on her own style. Ever since I first saw these works I have been deeply impressed. What you see doesn’t look like the work of a young artist; the depth and her particular style speak of great artistic maturity. What particularly touches me about the Rhythm of the Night series is the intensity with which the traumas of women in her homeland of Kurdistan are described. Every stroke, every placement, every reference to events is precise and builds up a complexity that is appropriate to the subject, as well as thought-provoking.
