Thomas Struth

The documentary photography of Thomas Struth (b. 1954, Geldern) often takes landscape or the built environment as its subject. The images presented here are part of the 'Museum Photographs' series which he began in 1989. Unlike the majority of Struth's images from this period, which rarely pictured people, in this series the human figure is the focus of the image. An array of the world's leading museums provide the setting for a series of portraits of groups of people caught in the act of viewing historical masterpieces. Struth's compositions imply a sense of theatricality and he has spoken of these images as marrying a 'contemporary moment and a historical moment in one photographic plane'. The boundary between representation and reproduction becomes blurred; in these photographs the space outside the painting and that of the painting itself form a whole, creating a new representational reality.
