Thomas Ruff

Thomas Ruff’s (b. 1958, Zell am Harmersbach, Germany) photographic work is characterised by large color portraits of young people, facing camera and evenly lighted. Their faces are usually expressionless and occupy the entire picture. In 1987, he start a series entitled Haus. In the same logic as with his portraits, he photographs dull, very post-war aesthetics, buildings, in a distant way. „This kind of buildings more or less represents the ideological and economical conditions of the Federal Republic of Germany during the past thirty years.”
