The works by Sino-American artist Sarah Sze (b. 1969, Boston) are always specifically conceived for the space in which they are shown. Her precisely composed sculptural assemblages are made up of an astonishing variety of everyday objects. These objects are by no means chosen at random, but selected with great precision on the basis of their formal qualities and their multiple connotations. In addition to ready-made objects, Sarah Sze also uses hand-made constructions out of “humble” materials such as matches, thread or paper. Her constructions, which often seem to be arranged according to archival principles of order, draw lines of skilfully crafted compositions into space. When invited to create a work for Mudam’s Pavilion, the artist was struck by the natural light and affinity to the surrounding landscape visible through the window and vast skylight. Playing astutely with the intrinsic characteristics of the space, her installation invites the viewer to sharpen his or her gaze.
