The series of works Women’s House (Sunglasses) is the result of collaborations initiated by Sanja Iveković (b. 1949, Zagreb) since the end of the 1990s in various European and Asian cities (Luxembourg, Zagreb, Bangkok, Priština, Utrecht) with women’s shelters. The testimony of several women encountered in these structures are linked to advertising images showing models wearing sunglasses. In this context the “glamour” accessory covers up another signification.
On the Barricades was initially presented at the Gwangju Biennial in South Korea as a performance in the exhibition space and evokes the massacres which took place in that city in May 1980 following the uprising of demonstrators from the democratic movement. The artist asked a group of young Koreans to hum the melody of a song composed by one of the demonstrators for the funerals of the first victims of the massacre.
