Mitra Tabrizian

Based in London, Iranian photographer Mitra Tabrizian is also a filmmaker and teacher. Her photographic work, which is generally presented in series, is the result of meticulously composed scenes that construct enigmatic narratives with no apparent link. There is, however, an obvious connection with films from early Iranian cinema or those of Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni. Tabrizian’s photographs portray individual protagonists or groups of protagonists who take on, in a theatrical manner, the appearance of actors. Tehran 2006 (2006) is a panoramic photograph taken in a new housing development in the suburbs of the Iranian capital, but which seems lost in the middle of nowhere. The artist presents her metaphorical vision of the current situation in post-revolutionary Iran. Frozen in movement on a dusty road, the characters seem to be “exiled in their own country”. Indifferent to each other, they populate this inhospitable place under the eyes of the Ayatollahs Khomeini and Khamenei who observe them from a large poster. The caption “We will follow the path of the imam and the martyrs of the revolution”, serves as an ironic commentary on the real circumstances of the Islamic revolution and its broken promises.
