Martin Parr

British photographer Martin Parr (b. 1952, Epsom, United Kingdom) has given a new dimension to the genre of photo-reportage with his razor sharp way of looking at the world. A member of the Magnum photo agency, Parr exhibits his photographs interchangeably in journalistic and fine arts contexts. Presenting his subjects in series, he has produced, since the beginning of the 1970s, an important photographic corpus in which he proves himself to be a precise and laconic commentator on leisure activities as well as on modes of consumption and communication around in the world. Close in style to so-called “vernacular photography”, a banal photography with no artistic pretensions, Parr’s observations are swarming with details that capture, with a distance tinged with irony, what appears to be both staged scenes as well as on-the-spot snapshots. The Luxembourg series was commissioned by the city of Luxembourg and the Greater Region for the Year of Culture in 2007. The images humorously illustrate some of the characteristics of social life in the Grand Duchy, echoing a certain globalized and ostentatious consumption documented by the artist in his Luxury (1994-2008) series.
