The sculptures of Martin Honert (b. 1953, Bottrop) draw upon his childhood memories of the Westphalia region of Germany in the 50s and 60s, and more broadly, the memories of a whole generation and the atmosphere of this postwar era. They reflect the collective memory and the imagination of young West Germans growing up during the years of the Wirtschaftswunder (‘economic miracle’), using photo souvenirs, children’s drawings, old advertisements, striking images and anodyne details to create sculptures and installations, which oscillate between the banality of their subjects and their sometimes very sophisticated realisation. Made with meticulous perfectionism and using a selection of materials that recalls the cheap toys of the period, these two altar boys are imbued with ambivalence, bringing out the contrast between religious devotion and worldly pride.
