Lorna Simpson

Feminist photographer, Lorna Simpson (b. 1960, New York), places Afro-American women confronted with sexism and racism at the centre of her work. Stereo Styles, is an emblematic, early work, comprising a series of ten large format black and white Polaroids, each depicting the back of the head and shoulders of a woman wearing a simple white dress. The portraits are distinguished by ten different hairstyles, each given a ‘stereotypical’ description which is engraved on the accompanying plaques. In this way, Simpson questions the relationship between appearance and identity, playing on the assumptions associated with identity such as hair, skin, gender and colour.
