Taking the form of a one hour long shot of a foggy landscape, Kitsune evokes a Japanese tale. This tells the story of Kitsune, the spirit of the fox, which can transform itself into a person, but can then disappear again just as quickly. With this parable about appearance and existence, about blindness, superstition, illusion and fear, Penalva (1949) puts our perception to the test: the seeminly Japanese scenery was in fact filmed on Madeira, and the fairy tale was in fact created by the artist himself.
