Jean-Luc Moerman’s (b. 1967, Brussels, Belgium) compositions are veritable explosions of forms and colours for which the frame demarcating the canvas could seem to be too restrictive. Moerman has assimilated all the influences of hip-hop, rap, street art and comic books. His drawings and paintings are immediately recognisable for their teeming organic networks which seem to have the capacity to propagate themselves. Reproduced as stickers, Moerman describes them as ‘urban tattoos’ and likens them to a visual virus that he spreads around the city. Similarly, he applies his unique marks in very large formats in the form of paintings on walls, windows and entire spaces, or even on automobiles. He reworks his compositions on a computer, transfers them onto the canvas with a projector and assembles them as painted collages. His painting Prolifération Polymorphe can thus be regarded as a detail from his production of infinite motifs.
