Fiona Rae
The dense and complex composition of Evil Dead 2 (1998) by Fiona Rae (b. 1963, Hong Kong) emerges from a dark background, bringing together two antagonistic approaches to abstract painting. Geometric elements with sharp contours are combined with diffuse and irregular forms in what appears to be a more spontaneous approach to painting. This piece forms part of the series of ‘black paintings’ produced between 1998 and 1999. These compositions employ stark oppositions between the dark backgrounds and colourful forms, smooth surfaces and impasto, geometry and gesture, sharply-defined and amorphous elements.
Rae plans the compositions of her paintings in advance and, since the 1990s, has worked with computer software. However, she always leaves room for improvisation during their execution. The title of the piece refers to the eponymous horror film from 1981, engaging the viewer’s active imagination and reinforcing the disturbing nature of the painting.
