Eve Sonneman

Eve Sonneman (b. 1946, Chicago, USA) is known primarily as a photographer but also works as a painter and poet. Since the early 1970s she has explored the medium of photography and is particularly interested in the tiny changes between one moment and the next. This has led her to develop the diptychs that have become her trademark and that seem spontaneously to give rise to narratives, providing her with the opportunity to experiment with numerous other expressive possibilities. ‘In photography,’ says the artist, ‘I’m interested in the tiny moment of gesture or innuendo of change. It’s a very tiny area that I carved out in my photography that is gentle, poetic, and delicate and reminds me of a passing moment.’ Sonneman approaches all her motifs with the same innocence and joy, as if she were a tourist enchanted by the lively allure of her discoveries, exploring a new city whose charm and beauty lie open before her. This is evident in St Francis, Milan (1987), where she depicts her discovery of the anecdotal scene of flowers on the St Francis Fountain in the Piazza Sant’Angelo, Milan.
