Daniel Buren

Daniel Buren (b. 1938, Boulogne-Billancourt) is a renowned conceptual artist whose work focuses on the context of art’s production and presentation as inextricably associated. Croisements was originally produced for an exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. The work employs his signature 8.7-centimeters-wide stripes devised to be applied to any architectural feature, transforming the museum or gallery environment with this simple gesture. Croisements underscores Buren’s interest in presentation devices or, as he puts it, the ‘staging’ of works in an exhibition. The two display cases can be seen as prototypes for this conceptual enquiry. Buren’s green stripes – applied in one part of the sculpture to the ceramics and in the other to the background – draw attention to the treatment of domestic objects within the museum environment and, more broadly, the role of the museum as a space of meaning and value.
