Ana Manso
The paintings of Ana Manso (b. 1984, Lisbon) are meticulously composed, at the crossroads between figurative representation and decorative motif. Expiration (2018) is typical of the artist’s approach to working in firm, fine or broad brushstrokes, in a style that is gestural but never expressive. A series of transparent layers gives the image a spatial depth inviting associations with landscapes or figures, yet remaining abstract.
Manso’s painting, murals, sculptures and temporary installations are informed by an interest in ancient and archaic crafts and artisanal techniques. Mark making provides not only form a compositional framework, but also emphasises the activity of painting. The brushstrokes creating a series of decorative layers that give the compositions their sculptural quality.
